This quote talks about how if you have your mind set on how you think something is, that when you view it from a different angle or "new eyes", that the new sight might be saddening to oneself. These "new eyes" are not literally new eyes, but more a way of expressing a change of perspective on how life is, caused either by maturing or a life experience. This relates to The Great Gatsby through all the characters. Nick, for example is currently changing his view of the "Great" Gatsby. He used to see him as an idol however, that is changing as he finds out more about Gatsby's past and his true person. Tom is currently viewing Daisy in a new light since his recent discovery of the relationship between Daisy and Gatsby. Daisy also changed her view of Tom from a caring husband to something much uglier since she had found out about his infidelity. In my life I have viewed many things in new ways and hence, changed my specific convictions about them. Sometimes I will view a specific media issue such as a trial, in a positive way but upon further investigation, I will change my view on it and suddenly see how ugly that issue was.
